Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy is an effective method for treating primarily superficial forms of skin cancer and precancerous conditions. Additionally, it is used in photorejuvenation of the facial skin, as well as in the treatment of acne and pigmentation.

The mechanism of action of photodynamic therapy involves the use of photosensitizing agents and light, which initiate a controlled photochemical reaction that selectively destroys diseased cells.

The procedure is carefully planned:

  1. A topical preparation is applied to the area of diseased skin, which is then covered with an appropriate dressing.
  2. The patient waits for about two hours, allowing the substance to concentrate in the affected tissue.
  3. The altered tissue is then treated with light from a specialized lamp, whose parameters, such as dose and power, are carefully selected by the physician, taking into account the individual needs of the patient.
  4. The treatment duration usually lasts from 5 to 20 minutes.
  5. The procedure concludes with the application of a post-treatment skincare product.

It is important to note that possible side effects of photodynamic therapy are mainly related to increased sensitivity to light in the treated skin area. Symptoms such as a burning sensation, moderate pain, skin peeling, swelling, redness, and itching are usually temporary. During this period, the use of soothing, moisturizing cosmetics and essential sun protection is recommended to provide comfort and support for the skin after the procedure.

The procedure is performed by a doctor.
